Types of Yoga

Types of Yoga

A Flavor for Everyone!

Types of Yoga
Quan Yin, Goddess of Compassion

There are as many types of yoga as there are people!

Hatha Yoga is what most Westerners call yoga. Hatha Yoga is the practice of physical postures or poses, along with breathing exercises and quieting the mind. It’s purpose is to prepare the body to sit in meditation and find union between body, mind and spirit.

Types of Hatha Yoga:

Level One: Gentle, Restorative, Basic, Iyengar, AM/PM, Yin, Pre- and post-natal.

Level Two: Intermediate (knowledge of basic asanas). Medium strength, flexibility and balance. Ashtanga Primary Series, Secondary Series. Power Yoga, Vinyasa Flow.

Level Three: Advanced, Ashtanga Secondary Series and above, Power Yoga.

Bikram/Hot Yoga:

Bikram/Hot Yoga is practiced in a 95-100+ degree room, which causes profuse sweating. This is to allow for a loosening of tight muscles and is thought to be cleansing.

Please check with your doctor prior to taking any yoga class, especially a Bikram or Hot Yoga class, if you have high blood pressure, heart problems or are pregnant. Be responsible for your own safety in any yoga class.

Other types of YOGA include:

Bhakti, the yoga of devotion to a higher source;
Karma, the yoga of service and helping others;
Jana, the yoga of self-study, knowledge, and wisdom;
Raja, the yoga of kings incorporating all the yogas.

As a lifestyle, Debbie practices Ashtanga Yoga, which literally means “eight-limbed yoga,” as outlined 2,500 years ago by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

Yamas [moral codes]
Niyamas [self-purification and study]
Asana [posture]
Pranayama [breath control]
Pratyahara [sense control]
Dharana [concentration]
Dhyana [meditation]
Samadhi [contemplation]

Debbie has studied with:

* Saul David Raye for Hatha/Bhakti flow

* Shiva Rea for Vinyansa Flow
* Sarah Powers for Yin Yoga
